DEPARTMENT NEWS

A Medical Student Medical College of Georgia Chapter of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons was formed in January 2018.

Our Parkinson’s Foundation Center of Excellence Site review was conducted on January 18. We have been a designated Parkinson’s Foundation Center of excellence for many years. As a Center of Excellence designated by the Parkinson’s Foundation, Inc., our Medical Center at Augusta University Movement Disorders/Parkinson’s Disease Center offers exceptional clinical diagnosis, treatment, and care not only for Parkinson’s disease, but also for many other movement disorders, including dystonia, essential tremor, Huntington’s disease, and Tourette’s syndrome. Advanced treatment options, including Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for tremors and other symptoms of Parkinson’s disease are available. Our team of physician specialists includes neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists and neuroradiologists.

The Memory Assessment Center at Augusta University is accepting new patients for in-depth evaluation of memory and cognitive decline. Patients undergo a detailed examination, neurological assessment, brain scan (CT or MRI), and blood tests before the diagnosis can be made or treatment can be initiated. In specific instances, other tests including EEG, lumbar puncture, or certain genetic tests may also be performed. Our program offers state-of-the-art and comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, education, and support for patients with dementia and their families. Outpatient consultations and evaluations include a clinical examination and cognitive screening assessment provided by a multi-disciplinary team that includes physicians, neuropsychologists, nurses, and counselors. This program specializes in treating patients with memory loss, dementia, and cognitive dysfunction and has several ongoing research projects focused on Alzheimer’s disease, management of behavioral and psychotic symptoms, and dementia associated with movement disorders.
